SEED PROCESSING UNIT
 

 

In recent past, the area under seed crops in the Maharashtra state is increased significantly. The Government of Maharashtra is promoting the farmers to produce more & more seeds of various crops under “Gram Beejotpadan” programme. The farmers are cultivating various crops including Soybean ,Jowar,wheat,Bengal gram ,Red gram, onion, pea, coriander, French bean,Rajama etc with increase in area under each crop every year.

As far as the seed production is concerned the field is dominated by private companies making it very expensive to farmers to buy the seed every year. There is negligible share of public sector or individual farmers in quality seed production. As far as the straight varieties are concerned the farmers can very well take up the seed production. This will not only improve his net returns but also make the seed available to other farmers at village level at much reduced prices.

But the main difficulty at village level seed production is non availability of seed processing infrastructure. There is only one seed processing infrastructure in Pune district making it expensive & tedious for farmers from Our area to take the seed up to 100 kms for processing.

During 2004-05 our KVK produced quality seed of latest varieties of Onion, French bean, Rajama and which was further given to more than 485 farmers. This year we have seed production of Onion variety Phule Samartha (S1) on large area on our own farm and on farmers field.

The farmers from more than 5 tehsils were get benefited & more & more farmers will produce seed on their own farm. 

The unit shall soon become self sufficient by charging the farmers for the services provided by the processing center. KVK has all the experts related to crop production , Now KVK is  constructing new building and storage for processing unit. KVK site is well connected by road & rail.
